Discover the self sustaining natural ecosystems, bio diversity, and how these properties are related to clean air, the food forest, the wildlife and our own habitat in this tour of Shady Grove Preserves’ old growth woodlands with Ron Broman, #6, Native Plant Society, Betty Young, #7, Horticulturalist and Certified Arborist, and Bob Riedeman, #8, Botanist and Native Plant Society. On this walk you will learn about: · Understory plants, shrubs, and trees. What they are and why they are important in our environment · Old growth hardwood forests and vines · Palmetto Groves · Long Leaf Pines and some of their history On this walk you might see… · Animals · Pileated Woodpeckers, warblers, Red Shouldered Hawks, and many other types of birds. · Flying Squirrels, raccoon, fox,small wild boar · Rat Snake, and small lizards. · Plants and Trees · In Bloom: Carolina Jasmine, Flowering Dogwood (just starting) small wild flowers · Tree Fungus, Lichens, et al · 35—40 Varieties of Trees, ask your guides as you go · Poison Ivy is out so BEWARE leaves of three.
